Forum Spam!
« on: June 19, 2011, 07:30:43 am »

This has been getting worse for all forums over the past year or so!
Many Forums have banned together to help fight this plage.
Spammers not only will be banned from this site but their user ids email and IPs will be entered into a data base.
This will make it impossible to log into any forum that can access this data base via a forum plug-in.
This forum currently actively checks 3 data bases when a new member tries to register.
Hopefully this will make for a more enjoyable forum!

T,

You and I have been friends for a few years on several different forums,  and from those, it's obvious that this is an epidemic.  Lets this thread be a warning to those who only join forums to run an Xrumer service to boost another sites SEO for hire by spamming links to forums.  We will be vigilant to keep our forums on topic.  We exist to help others with similar interests here and elsewhere, and have no time to put up with off topic links.  keep up the good work on keeping these forums clean, and I (we) will do the same.

The forum mods I put in place to combat this have been working well. `:)

However many users either miss the registration email or disregard it.
For this reason I've decided to easy up on the strength of the registration process.
New users still won't be able to post links and if a wave of spammers gets threw I'll have no chose but to reinstate the registration process strength. :(

Lets hope the relaxed registration process. Does not result in a large spam increase.
If it does then you probably will have to tighten it again.

Yes, I had tried to convince X10 to allow the extra mods I run here on their forum, but they wouldn't OK it.
I was only able to add one mod which did cut down spam dramatically but not stop it.
Even had some x10 administrators on board but they couldn't even get the OK to upgrade the forum! ::) :`)
